Sales Discovery

Definition

The phase of the sales cycle dedicated to understanding the prospect's situation, problems, implications and needed outcomes — before any solution presentation. The single largest determinant of close rate.

Discovery ends when you can state the problem in their words

Not your category's words, and not the words on your website. If the customer's description of what is wrong cannot be repeated back using their own terminology, their systems and their numbers, discovery has not finished — regardless of how many calls have happened or how friendly they were.

The failure mode is answering too early

The moment a recognisable pain appears, the instinct is to say that the product handles it. That single move ends discovery and starts a pitch, and everything learned afterwards is filtered through a solution the buyer has already been shown. Holding the solution back for one more question is the highest-return discipline in technical sales.

Write down what you did not learn

The gaps matter as much as the findings. An explicit list of unanswered questions is what makes the next call productive and what a handoff needs most.
