What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently and to provide information to the website owners. "Similar technologies" includes localStorage, which stores data in your browser in a similar way to cookies.

Cookies We Use

Strictly Necessary

These are essential for the website to function. They do not require your consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). They cannot be disabled.

Name Type Purpose Duration
cookie_consent_given localStorage Records that you have made a cookie consent decision Persistent
cookie_consent_analytics localStorage Stores your preference for analytics cookies (true/false) Persistent
cookie_consent_date localStorage Timestamp of when you made your consent decision Persistent

Analytics Cookies (Consent Required)

These cookies are only set if you explicitly consent via our cookie banner. We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use our website. IP anonymisation is enabled, meaning your full IP address is never stored by Google.

Name Provider Purpose Duration
_ga Google Distinguishes unique visitors by assigning a randomly generated number 2 years
_ga_EVEKTQ72VV Google Maintains session state for Google Analytics 4 2 years

The Google Analytics script is not loaded until you consent. If you decline analytics cookies, no GA script is loaded, no cookies are set, and no data is sent to Google.

For more information about how Google uses data, see: Google Privacy Policy and Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Consent Receipt Storage

To comply with GDPR Article 7 (demonstrating valid consent) and ICO guidance on consent records, when you make a cookie consent choice we store a server-side record of your decision. This allows us to demonstrate, if required by regulators, that valid consent was obtained.

What We Store

Data Element Description Purpose
Hashed IP Address Your IP address hashed with SHA-256 (one-way, non-reversible) Identify unique visitors without storing actual IP
Visitor ID (consent only) Anonymous UUID generated only when you grant consent, stored in localStorage as winiq_visitor_id Link consent records across sessions (not created if you reject)
Consent Action Your choice: Accept All, Reject All, or Save Preferences Record what action you took
Consent Choices Analytics and marketing consent status (true/false) Record specific preferences granted
Consent Version Version of the consent banner shown (currently 1.0) Track which consent text was presented
Page URL The page where consent was given Record context of consent
Referrer How you arrived at our website Audit context
Timestamp Date and time consent was recorded (UTC) Prove when consent was obtained

Why We Store This Data

Under GDPR Article 7(1), we must be able to demonstrate that you consented to cookies where consent is required. The ICO (UK's data protection authority) recommends keeping records of consent that include: who consented, when they consented, what they were told, and how they consented.

Lawful Basis: Legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) — maintaining records to demonstrate compliance with consent requirements under GDPR Article 7 and UK PECR regulations.

Retention: Consent receipts are retained for 3 years from the date of consent, in line with ICO guidance and potential regulatory review periods.

The hashed IP address cannot be reversed to recover your actual IP address. The visitor ID is only created when you grant consent — if you reject cookies, no identifier is stored in your browser and we rely solely on the hashed IP for the audit record.

Managing Your Preferences

You can manage your cookie preferences at any time by:

  • Clicking the "Manage Cookie Preferences" link in the footer of any page on our website
  • Changing your browser settings to block or delete cookies
  • Using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on

Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it — simply use the "Manage Cookie Preferences" link and update your selections.

Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page.
