Sales-to-PreSales Handoff
Definition
The transfer of deal context from the account executive to the SE before a technical engagement: what discovery revealed, who the stakeholders are, the competitive landscape for this specific deal, and what has already been promised. When the handoff is a Slack message and a calendar invite, SEs walk in blind and deals die from handoff gaps rather than product gaps.
Four things the SE needs, and rarely gets
What discovery actually established, who the stakeholders are and what each one cares about, which competitors are in the deal, and what has already been promised. The last is the one that causes the most damage: an SE who does not know what the AE committed to can contradict it in the first technical call.
Why it fails structurally
Nobody is against good handoffs. They fail because the transfer is an extra task for the person who already has the context and does not need it written down. Any solution that depends on the AE finding time to write a brief will work for a fortnight. Solutions that assemble the brief from what already exists survive.
Deals die from handoff gaps, not product gaps
An evaluation that starts with the SE re-running discovery has already spent the buyer's patience on something they thought was finished.
