PreSales Operations
Definition
The function that supports the technical sales organisation operationally — tooling, demo environments, RFP libraries, SE assignment workflows, knowledge management and analytics. Reports to the head of PreSales or RevOps.
The function exists to stop duplicated effort
Demo environments, answer libraries, SE assignment, tooling, reporting: without an owner, every SE maintains a private version of each. The cost is invisible because it never appears as a project — it appears as senior engineers spending Friday afternoons rebuilding a demo tenant that three colleagues have already rebuilt.
The signal that you need one
Somewhere around eight to twelve SEs, the coordination load stops fitting into a manager's spare capacity. The symptoms are recognisable: nobody can say who is working what, RFP answers diverge between teams, demo environments drift, and the answer to any process question is the name of one person who happens to know.
Ops is measured in reclaimed SE hours
The function justifies itself by how much engineering time it returns to deals. If that number is not tracked, the role gets read as overhead the first time budget tightens.
