PreSales

Definition

The function within a B2B sales organisation that handles all technical work before a contract is signed: discovery, demos, POCs, RFP responses, technical objection handling, and the technical win. Sits between Sales and Product, reports to either the CRO or the Head of PreSales.

What the function actually owns

PreSales owns the technical credibility of a deal. Where an account executive owns the commercial relationship and the close, presales owns whether the buyer's technical staff believe the product does what is claimed — and whether it will work in their environment specifically.

Naming, and why it varies

The same function is called presales, sales engineering, solutions consulting or solutions engineering depending on the company and the region. The titles are largely interchangeable; where they differ, “solutions consulting” tends to imply more post-sale involvement and “sales engineering” a deeper product-technical focus.

The distinction that matters more than the title

Whether the role carries a quota. Most presales roles do not, which is what allows the engineer to say “we are not a good fit here” and be believed. That credibility is the asset the function trades on, and it is the first thing lost when the role is compensated like sales.

How it is measured — and how it usually is not

Activity counts — demos delivered, RFPs completed — are the default and they measure busyness rather than impact. They also rise when a team is overloaded, which makes them the wrong evidence to bring to a staffing conversation.
